Unfortunately, our planet is burning away. This statement is backed up by the LOTS ofย scientificย evidence, some of which you can find presented below. Actually, the evidenceย is so clear that we see the same trend in every indicator we look at:ย  biodiversityย losses, green-house gasses (GHG), loss of ice surface, rise of global land & sea surface temperatures, coral reefs decay, increase on natural disasters, lack of rain, severe droughts, lack of snowfalls, extreme temperatures, etc.

Globally, GHG are mostly derived from:

๐Ÿ”ฅenergyย (~73%, includes heating, travel, industry, etc.)

๐Ÿ”ฅagricultureย , Forestry and Land use (~18%)

๐Ÿ”ฅcementย and (petro)chemical industry (~5%)

๐Ÿ”ฅwasteย (3%)

A big chunk of the problem lies within political (ir)responsibility. Newย legislationsย must be set on place to regulate energy sources, energy and natural resources usage, travel and agricultural practices, and uncontrolled consumerism. Last year's COP28ย has set a new milestone by ๐ซ๐ž๐œ๐จ๐ ๐ง๐ข๐ณ๐ข๐ง๐  ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐ง๐ž๐ž๐ ๐ญ๐จ ๐ญ๐ซ๐š๐ง๐ฌ๐ข๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง ๐š๐ฐ๐š๐ฒ ๐Ÿ๐ซ๐จ๐ฆ ๐Ÿ๐จ๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ข๐ฅ ๐Ÿ๐ฎ๐ž๐ฅ๐ฌ. Although the term 'transition away' is quite loose, it is a big first step that will lead to further refinement on future editions of the conference.

However, while new policies are a must, Did you know that the higher your income, the more likely the majority of yourย emissionsย come from flying and driving? Thus, ๐ซ๐ž๐๐ฎ๐œ๐ข๐ง๐  ๐Ÿ๐ฅ๐ฒ๐ข๐ง๐  ๐š๐ง๐ ๐๐ซ๐ข๐ฏ๐ข๐ง๐  ๐ฐ๐ข๐ฅ๐ฅ ๐ก๐š๐ฏ๐ž ๐š ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ซ๐จ๐ง๐  ๐ข๐ฆ๐ฉ๐š๐œ๐ญ ๐ข๐ง ๐ซ๐ž๐๐ฎ๐œ๐ข๐ง๐  ๐ฒ๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ ๐ž๐ฆ๐ข๐ฌ๐ฌ๐ข๐จ๐ง๐ฌ, so that is direct action you can take. For example, for those of us inย academia, flying causes about 2/3ย as many emissions as campus operations, meaning if you decide to take the train to your next conference or to not participate in every overseas conference, you will also reduce yourย carbon footprint.

Inspired by others, this year I stopped looking away from the problem and implemented meaningful changes to my lifestyle. It took courage, discipline and sacrifice to minimize emissions, but it was fun and rewarding. ๐–๐ก๐š๐ญ ๐š๐›๐จ๐ฎ๐ญ ๐ฒ๐จ๐ฎ ๐๐จ ๐ญ๐ก๐ž ๐ฌ๐š๐ฆ๐ž? Here some ideas for yourย 2024 goals:

๐Ÿ’ก Reuse an old NYE outfit instead of buying a new one.

๐Ÿ’ก Plan your next holiday by public transportย instead of plane/car.

๐Ÿ’ก Learn someย plant basedย recipes to lower your diet-related emissions.

๐Ÿ’ก Put on a sweater instead of heating as to feel comfortable in short-sleeves.

๐Ÿ’ก Buy local and seasonal food instead of overseas products.

๐Ÿ’ก Check out the local thrift store for that item of clothing/furniture you need.
